GuardMac vs Wispr Flow
Updated October 2026
Both apps let you hold a key and dictate anywhere on your Mac. The difference is where your voice goes and what it costs.
The short version: Wispr Flow sends every word you say to their servers and charges monthly. GuardMac runs Whisper locally on your Mac and keeps your audio on your machine. Raw dictation is free; smart formatting is $9.99 a month.

Why local matters
When you dictate a message to a colleague, a note to yourself, or a password reminder, that audio is yours. GuardMac runs OpenAI's Whisper model directly on your Mac's Neural Engine. The audio never leaves your machine, and there is no server to be breached.
Smart formatting (the part that adds punctuation and fixes capitalisation) does use a small cloud model, but it is opt-in, it only sees the text (never audio), and you can turn it off at any time.
Why GuardMac costs less
Wispr Flow charges $8 to $12 a month for everything. GuardMac splits Mac health and dictation so you only pay for what you use. The Mac health side (Pro) is $29 once for three Macs. Smart dictation (Voice) is $9.99 a month or $89.99 a year. Even if you buy both, you pay less than Wispr and you get Mac monitoring Wispr does not offer at all. Raw dictation is free with no account.
What Wispr Flow does that GuardMac does not
Wispr Flow has a larger team and more polish in some areas. Their onboarding is smoother, they support more languages out of the box, and their formatting model has had more training data. If you dictate in multiple languages in the same sentence, Wispr handles that better today.
GuardMac is one developer shipping a tool that solves the same core problem without a subscription or a cloud dependency for the speech part.
